(Understand this and your life will change forever)
Picture this scenario:
You have to study.
You know you have to study.
You even know what, exactly.
But it just feels like a hassle to start.
And even when you do, you’re not fully there.
Doing anything else would be more interesting.
You simply don’t feel motivated to keep going…
Now, let me tell you who’s to blame: Dopamine.
Or rather, the fact you don’t know how it works and how modern society is built to exploit it.
After you read this, I promise: you’ll never struggle with studying ever again.
Let’s go.
It’s common to find people on the internet describing dopamine as “the pleasure molecule”.
But that’s an oversimplification.
Dopamine actually is a neuromodulator.
To better understand this, see how the neuroscientist Andrew Huberman explains it in the episode “Controlling Your Dopamine for Motivation, Focus & Satisfaction” of his podcast “Huberman Lab”:
“Imagine two people talking to one another at a concert. That communication between them is analogous to the communication carried out by neurotransmitters, whereas neuromodulators influence the communication of many neurons. […] So it (dopamine) modulates a bunch of things all at once, and that’s why it’s so powerful at shifting not just our levels of energy, but also our mindset, and also our feelings of whether or not we can or cannot accomplish something.”
It’s not just the “pleasure” chemical.
It’s the motivation chemical.
It drives you to pursue things.
It pushes you to act.
As Dr. Andrew Huberman explains:
That means dopamine prepares your brain to do hard things.
To chase goals.
To learn.
To work.
But there’s a catch.
Your brain doesn’t just care about how much dopamine you feel.
It cares about how much you feel compared to what you felt recently.
As Huberman says:
Here’s what that means:
If you’ve been feeling huge spikes of dopamine lately, your brain will start to expect those spikes.
Consequently, anything that gives you less dopamine will feel boring.
Even if it’s good for you.
Even if it’s necessary.
Even if you really want to do it.
One of the things that impacts dopamine in our brains the most is social media.
Let’s talk about TikTok.
Instagram Reels.
YouTube Shorts.
These apps are designed to give you dopamine spikes every few seconds.
Funny, sexy, surprising, scary, inspiring…
Scroll.
Swipe.
Repeat.
And the problem?
Your threshold for interest increases.
You’ve trained your brain to want instant, high-reward content.
So when you sit down to study?
It feels slow.
Hard.
Boring.
Even if it’s not.
It’s not just social media.
Other high-stimulation habits mess with your dopamine too:
These things aren’t “evil,” but they create huge dopamine spikes with very little effort.
So when your brain compares that to the effort of studying?
It chooses the easy hit.
Again, and again, and again…
Until motivation breaks.
Learning a language is a long-term effort.
It requires delayed gratification.
You don’t feel fluent after watching a video.
You might not understand a movie after a month.
Progress is naturally slow.
However, it is cumulative.
That means your dopamine system needs to be balanced.
But if it’s used to fast, high dopamine hits, then reading, listening, or memorizing vocabulary will inevitably fall flat.
Your brain will see no point.
It won’t be able to feel the future reward.
So it will give up.
Now, here’s how to fix it for good:
The good news is, no matter how addicted and weakened your brain has become, you can always retrain it.
You can bring your dopamine baseline back to normal.
Here’s how:
Pick a day.
Cut out or significantly reduce all high-dopamine activities:
And do simple, longer lasting things instead:
This resets your dopamine levels.
It makes lower-stimulation activities feel rewarding again.
Slowly but surely, one at a time.
Use the “dopamine sandwich”:
Example:
You’re training your brain to associate effort with reward.
Add just enough novelty to keep going:
Small tweaks, big effects.
Not too easy.
Not too hard.
Just enough to keep you engaged.
If it’s too hard, you’ll quit.
If it’s too easy, you’ll get bored.
Track progress with tiny goals:
The feeling of progress fuels motivation.
Dopamine is extremely physical.
Bad sleep = low dopamine receptors
No movement = less dopamine production
Dehydration = poor brain performance
Treat your body well.
Your brain will thank you.
Now, understand this:
You don’t need more dopamine.
You need less noise.
Less chasing.
More meaning.
More focus.
As Huberman reminds us:
When you raise your baseline artificially, real life feels dull.
But when you bring your baseline down, real life becomes exciting again.
Yes, even a grammar exercise.
So, try this today:
Repeat this tomorrow.
And again the next day.
You’ll be amazed how motivation returns.
Not through force.
But through chemistry and choice.
Stay focused.
Stay curious.
Keep going.
