Common doesn't mean normal.

Your health, happiness, and success depend on this.

These days I innocently opened Instagram.

I say that ‘cause I wasn’t ready for what would come.

Simply one of the best videos I’ve seen recently.

In it, the description of at least 90% of people:

(The video is in Portuguese, so the following rhyme was adapted from the original)

*“Drowning your ss in booze, lungs full of smoke. Fighting loved ones daily, in bed you soak. Worship politicians high, on anxiety pills you rely. Cheer when tax hikes hit. Always feeling like shit. Spending all day sitting down, processed food all around. Never once lifting weights, defenseless is your fate. Won’t read, won’t learn. For growth no concern. Scared to death of love’s touch, settling for a life that isn’t much. Common behavior we see. Normal? It shouldn’t be.”

All of this points to one word: likelihood.

The tendency to go in one direction or not.

Each of our decisions alters our likelihood.

Here’s how to change it to increase your health, happiness, and success:

  1. Fix your SLEEP!

People don’t understand what sleeping really is.

Most think it’s just “resting.”

Not at all.

There’s something called the ‘circadian rhythm.’

It relates to your body’s functioning over a 24-hour period.

If it’s out of sync, your body will be too.

And if your body is off, so will be your life.

So, how do you regulate it?

3 things: fixed schedule, sunlight, and exercise.

Sleeping and waking at the same time will help your brain and body understand the day has a beginning, middle, and end.

Without that clearly defined, it’s like your brain wakes up with jet lag every day.

The problem?

A bad night’s sleep directly affects your brain’s functioning.

It impacts your judgment, increases irritability, reduces focus, memory function, and many other things.

Setting a fixed bedtime and wake-up time (if you don’t already have one) helps fix this.

But it’s not the only thing.

The second step is to include exposure to sunlight/natural light every day.

Sunlight isn’t just vitamin D, despite all its benefits.

In fact, it’s exactly what will regulate something extremely important for your brain’s optimized functioning:

The suprachiasmatic nucleus.

It acts as the body’s internal clock.

You know those people who naturally wake up at 6 a.m. with no alarm clock?

Well, their suprachiasmatic nucleus is dead on.

Not only does it regulate our sleep, but also body temperature and hormone release (especially melatonin, which helps us sleep well).

Now, guess what it uses as a base to function properly?

Light.

It adjusts our circadian rhythm based on the light levels in the environment.

You know what that means?

That when you’re almost drunk with sleep and insist on staying on your phone/Netflix/video games/etc., you’re setting yourself up for a terrible start to the next day.

This is because your brain is telling you it needs rest, but you keep exposing it to artificial lights and stimuli.

Thus, you make it understand that it’s not time to fully rest, since there’s light plus sensory stimuli.

If your brain doesn’t get proper sleep at this time, it will definitely find a way to get it later.

That’s why we see so many people falling asleep at work, school, college, on the road, on the street, etc.

Exposing yourself to natural light daily will not only fix this but give you a ton of other benefits (such as through vitamin D, for example).

I emphasize “natural light” because some people live in areas with limited sunlight.

If that’s your case, make it a habit to go outside during peak sunlight hours, even in low temperatures.

A great way to do this is by including the 3rd point:

Exercise.

Not necessarily hitting the gym.

Not necessarily crossfit.

Not necessarily anything specific.

Whatever you can do.

That’s enough.

Can you walk for 15 minutes?

Start doing that.

Eventually go up to 20.

Then 30.

And then, why not try running a bit?

And so on.

Exercising won’t just tire your body so you can fall asleep faster at night.

It will also give you all the benefits mentioned in books like “Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain” by John Ratey:

Stress reduction, improved brain function, better mood, enhanced immunity, strengthening of the cardiovascular system, metabolism regulation, increased neuroplasticity (the brain’s ability to learn quickly), etc.

And the best part: all of this for free.

Remember, we’re talking about exercising.

Not about killing yourself at the gym.

Going for a walk, run, or even a morning workout already gives you a reason to wake up early and an excuse to get sunlight.

Three birds with one stone.

This will make you sleep like an angel and wake up ready to take on the world the next morning.

Do not mess with your sleep.

We’re not talking about just waking up tired.

We’re talking about consciously worsening ALL functional aspects of your brain, body, and mind.

It’s a trade-off that NEVER pays off.

  1. Fix your DIET!

Most of us eat ultra-processed foods full of hidden sugar and salt.

It’s no coincidence that the food industry coined the term “bliss point.”

This term refers to the ideal combination of sugar, fat, and salt in food to make it as pleasurable as possible.

The problem?

Eating poorly completely disrupts your gut microbiome.

The microbiome directly influences the production of vitamins, hormones, and neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine (the two that impact our happiness levels the most).

If you eat poorly, you disrupt it.

And if it’s disrupted, a snowball effect is created.

Just like with sleep, your mood is affected, your stress and anxiety rise, along with greater risks of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, depression, etc.

Do not mess with your diet.

It’s the fuel you put into the vehicle you’ve been given.

If you put the wrong stuff in, you won’t move an inch.

So take this VERY seriously.

  1. Fix your MIND!

Lastly, pay more attention to your thought patterns.

A thought pattern is how our mind is already trained to react in certain situations.

For example: have you seen how people react when they drop something?

Some say nothing, just pick up whatever it is, clean up the mess and move on.

Others start complaining about everything, yelling, turning red with anger, etc.

Both are thought patterns.

However, patterns that are reactive.

Most of the time, we are reactive, not active.

We only react to what happens to us, no initiative beforehand.

If we want to stop living this life of pushing everything forward and waiting for a miracle to fall from the sky, we need to take charge of our lives.

We need to be aware that our mind won’t always be our ally.

Sometimes it will lead us to bad thoughts and feelings because they will make us want to stay in the comfort zone.

Stay with what we already know.

But the life we want requires us to sacrifice the life we have.

Living days like this, being tossed around by passing feelings, momentary sensations whose origins we don’t even know…

Is not a life worth living.

A life that’s truly worth living is one where you wake up excited to be alive.

Where what matters most is your peace, and you know how to maintain it.

Where your daily choices align with the amazing person you will soon become.

A life where every day makes you want to get out of bed.

It might seem utopian, but it should be the norm.

If it’s not for others, let it be for you.

Apply what I’ve said.

And if you fail, try again.

Don’t let yourself go.

You’re worth far more than you think.

Keep going, my friend.
